Protocol: Traveling

2.0 mile(s)

Checklist Comments:    This was a joint BBC-Menotomy club walk. It wasn’t cancelled as it had rained about 5:30 am & then stopped completely. Cloudy & cool 45 to 50. We went from Shaw’s to Moody St. Moody St. to Prospect St. has been closed for DCR repairs which may last all summer. It must have just closed Monday or Tuesday as it was open on Saturday with no signs indicating closing which I thought was going to begin on May 6, 2024.

31 species

Canada Goose  19    Some nesting pairs haven’t had hatches yet. We saw 4 goslings jump down about 50 feet into the water from the remains of a bridge abutment. It was amazing to see. Photo of the last 2 to jump and them in the water. Unfortunately, I didn’t take photo of the entire abutment for an idea of how high up it was.

Wood Duck  2    Male.

Mallard  7    Not uncommon to see one sitting on the railing of one of the overlooks.

Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon)  2    Near the Charles Museum of Industry along the river in Waltham.

Mourning Dove  7    Lily got a very sweet photo of the 2.

Tree Swallow  9    Stretching & sitting on power line over Newton St. Charles River Waltham.

Northern Rough-winged Swallow  2    Saw flying from Moody St. bridge. One had landed in a tree bad photo but I thought I had missed it altogether.

Carolina Wren  1

European Starling  5

Gray Catbird  1    Spotted by Lily near the Elm St. boardwalk that goes under the road. 1st one of the season along the Charles River in Waltham for me 2nd one in Waltham. Poor light.
