Protocol: Traveling
0.879 mile(s)
Checklist Comments: Brookline Bird Club – Barrett’s Mill Farmland – Leader: Kathy Dia – stunning fall morning ; passerines seemed rather quiet at first, especially sparrows, but more active as it warmed up. An excellent raptor show!
40 species (+1 other taxa)
Canada Goose 68
Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon) 14
Mourning Dove 1
Turkey Vulture 3
Cooper’s Hawk 2 We had watched these Cooper’s Hawks flying around in the usual ways , fast direct flight and soaring and circling. Then on the way out we saw them dive headfirst in a stoop far across the field. I had never seen Cooper’s Hawks do this and at first thought they were Peregrines- but the wings weren’t quite right. I read that they do in fact occasionally dive in a stop , especially in urban areas with pigeons, so I think this is what we’d seen- really cool!!
