Checklist Comments:    David Williams led this Brookline Bird Club Walk to 2 stops at Lake Quannapowitt.  The first stop was behind the Lord Wakefield Inn.  We then drove to the Wakefield Yacht Club and observed from there. David does a super job leading these walks and we had a fantastic Fall day with lots of great birds !  28 degree air temperature with sunny skies and 4 mph winds from the West @ the start.

Bufflehead  1    Female, overall black plumage wth white colored “swoosh” mark behind eye.

Double-crested Cormorant  3    2 toned bill, yellow below gray on top with top bill hooked, yellow lures, brown head and neck, brown plumage with scalloping pattern.

Suntaug Lake, Peabody/Lynnfield, Essex, Massachusetts, US

Puritan Lawn Memorial Park. We viewed Suntaug Lake from the Cemetery side, then we drove over to Winona Lake and then out onto Route 1 and down Moulton Drive to White Hall Park to review Suntaug from the other side.
Canada Goose  8    Swimming @ White Hall Park side of Suntaug Lake.
Mallard  2    2 @ Suntaug Park on Puritan Lawn Memorial Park side and 2 at Winona Lake.
Ring-necked Duck  6    5 Males & 1 Female @ Winona Lake.  observed well through scope.
Lesser Scaup  2    1 Male: round head with peak behind the eye; greenish-black plumage on head – throat – chest; powder blue bill with black tip; gray on top; white underneath with black tail feathers.  1 Female: brown head – throat – chest; orange eyes; white at base of bill; grayish bill with black tip; gray underneath; brown on top and darker towards the tail. Seen well through scope and confirmed by David Williams from White Hall Park @ Suntaug Lake.
Greater/Lesser Scaup  4    White on base if bill, brown overall plumage.  While seen well through scope @ 1st Suntaug Lake viewing location; we were unable to distinguish between Lesser & Greater species due to constant diving and the long distance.
White-winged Scoter  2    Mostly black plumage with orange bill and white eye ring.  Observed well through scope @ both Suntaug Lake locations.
Bufflehead  5    3 Bufflehead at Winona Lake and 2 at the second stop @ Suntaug Lake.
Hooded Merganser  7    Observed @ Winona Lake – 5 Males: large “bunble-shaped” head with big white patch; yellow eyes and thin, pointed black bill; 2 white spurs on chest; brown plumage on flanks & underneath. 2 Females: overall drab gray plumage; rufous colored cap; tan throat; yellow bill; black wings; gray underneath with long up-turned tail.
Common Merganser  12    Males with green cap and black head & neck; white colored throat; buffy-tan colored chest & belly; black top and gray colored tail feathers; orange bill.  Females with brown head & neck; white patch on throat; orange bill; gray underneath with white patch on outer wings.  Obeerved well through scope @ Winona Lake.
Ruddy Duck  3    Observed @ Suntaug Lake from Puritan Lawn Memorial Park side.  Observed well through scope.
Bald Eagle  2    2 Adults.  1 Male & 1 Female nesting in tall tree at Suntaug Lake from Puritan Lawn Memorial Park side. observed well through scope.
Red-tailed Hawk  1    Light-morph flying above @ Winona Lake.
White-breasted Nuthatch  2

Pine Hill Road Grassland

In June, this wonderfully preserved grassland is alive with the songs of breeding Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrow, which are state listed as endangered species. Prairie Warbler, Indigo Bunting, and American Kestrels nest regularly here as well. A mile walk on level grade; can be dry so bring water.
