Unless otherwise stated, BBC field trips and webinars are open to all participants and are free to attend. Most field trips do not need preregistration though all webinars do. Ted Elliman will guide us for this walk along the trails at the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Concord will focus on the wildflowers that are blooming in the site's marshes, floodplains, and meadows. Led by DCR Park Staff. Come observe the beautiful details of birds and their behaviors and share observations with others in the group. Pose questions and memories that observations elicit. The BBC is partnering with the Captain John's Whale Watching Tour Company to travel to Stellwagen Bank - primary feeding grounds for the Humpback Whale, the endangered Right Whale, and other marine wildlife, including seabirds. We will walk slowly looking for rails, shorebirds, wading birds, and migrating Common Nighthawks. The first portion of the walk is .6 miles round trip. Those to wish to join us on an extended walk with permission to enter private property, to look for Night-Herons. Note that entrance fee or pass is required.
Led by DCR staff. We will search on foot up to one mile, on flat, easy terrain for large groups of herons and egrets, common and rare shorebirds. This is a traveling program by car or bike. Approximately 1.5 mile walk along an old railbed and through forest to the marsh edge in search of American and Least Bittern, and other wetland species such as Virginia Rail, Sora, Marsh Wren, raptors, herons, egrets, and blackbirds. If time permits we may also walk the Partridge Island trail nearby. All skill levels welcome. Terrain
We will spend the morning walking 3-4 miles through fields, forests and wetlands looking for post-nesting birds and early migrants. Contact leader the night before in case of rain prediction. No restrooms are available. Bring sunscreen and insect repellent. Be prepared for poison ivy.
Beginners encouraged. A two-hour walk over easy to moderate trails in search of seasonal specialties. Boots advisable. Co-sponsored by DCR.
