Unless otherwise stated, BBC field trips and webinars are open to all participants and are free to attend. Most field trips do not need preregistration though all webinars do. Led by DCR staff. We will search on foot up to one mile, on flat, easy terrain for osprey, large groups of egrets, migrating shorebirds, meadow and grassland breeders. This is a traveling program by car or bike. Prepare for mosquitoes and ticks. Reasonable accommodations for persons with disabilities available upon request. Ages: Adults and
We will hike the fields focusing on grassland breeders, particularly Eastern Meadowlark and Grasshopper Sparrow.
This unique grassland habitat is host to a rich variety of species, including Eastern Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, Bobolink, American Kestrel, and possibly Blue Grosbeak. We will focus on observing the meadowlarks and Grasshopper Sparrows for signs of breeding; especially carrying food and recent fledglings. We will finish up with listening for Eastern Whip-poor-wills call in
Led by DCR Park Staff. Come observe the beautiful details of birds and their behaviors and share observations with others in the group. Pose questions and memories that observations elicit. Birds we expect to see include Piping Plover, Manx Shearwater, Common Tern and resident gulls. Ages: adults and children 8 years + with an adult
All the nesting birds will still be around, with good views of young out of the nest being fed by parents: Veery, Indigo Bunting, Catbird, Red-winged Blackbird, Tree Swallow, Bobolink, Wood Thrush, Baltimore Oriole, and Warblers. Expect to walk about 2 miles on trails through meadow and woods with some steep sections.
Includes three to five miles of walking relatively flat terrain. Might include some bushwacking. Driving on hard packed dirt roads.
Join us to observe resident birds and spring migrants in a unique urban habitat that hosts many bird species and is an excellent location for finding rarities. A BNC naturalist will help us find and identify birds through field marks, sounds, and behaviors. The walk is suitable for all levels of birders (novice to advanced).
We will walk easy trails looking for shorebirds, ducks, wading birds, rails, and nesting songbirds. This is also a great time to look for butterflies and other interesting insects. Note that entrance fee or pass is required.
We walk through the sanctuary looking for shorebirds and other marsh specialties. Targets will be waders, breeding songbirds, Saltmarsh Sparrows, and maybe even a lucky Seaside Sparrow. The walking is moderate and trails are accessible. It may be warm and there will be bugs!
Stroll along an easy to walk paved path. Possible sightings include Wood Ducks, Yellow Warbler, Warbling Vireo, and Great Blue Heron. Cosponsored with Waltham :Land Trust and Menotomy Bird Club.
