Be prepared for a three-mile walk. Our target birds will be Pileated Woodpecker, Winter Wren and a variety of warblers including Louisiana Waterthrush. Just two miles from the Rhode Island border, Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk, MA offers six miles of nature hiking trails through nearly 200 acres of fields, forests, streams and ponds. A Purple Martin colony can be observed nesting in the gourds in the main field. Trails are easy to moderate in difficulty. Expect 2.5

We will walk a 2 mile loop through fallow fields and some wooded areas. Trails are gravel, fairly level and usually dry. This is a great spring migration spot for warblers.

With permission from the airport manager, we will be allowed to go inside the second fence line onto the airport, closed to the general public, in search of the grassland birds which nest at the airport. We will visit both of these areas. The walking is fairly easy along fire roads, gravel trails, and woodland trails. No restroom facilities.

This area is great for late migrants and nesting species. Baltimore Oriole, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, and Cedar Waxwing are regulars. Alder Flycatcher and Common Nighthawks are possible. This is a one-mile walk on paved paths and boardwalk. Insect repellent suggested.
