Searching for Lost Birds: How Rare Birds Can Inspire Exploration and Conservation in the Age of Extinction

Around the world, there are just over 130 species of birds that no one has been able to find and definitively document in over a decade. These “lost” species are some of the biggest and most complicated mysteries in ornithology. John will share some of his experiences searching for Lost Birds and explore why these efforts are important for conservation.

John C. Mittermeier, Director of the Search for Lost Birds at American Bird Conservancy, holds a PhD in biodiversity science from the University of Oxford and a Masters in ornithology from Louisiana State University. He has done ornithological fieldwork in more than a dozen countries. He started his birding career in Massachusetts at age 12, with regular visits to Mount Auburn Cemetery, and other BBC trips. Had it not been for the amazing support of BBC members and their enthusiasm for giving him rides around Massachusetts as a young birder, he probably would never have considered a career in bird conservation!
