DESCRIPTION:A short\, two mile loop over slightly hilly trails looking for resident woodland birds and early migrants\, namely Hairy Woodpecker\, Brown Creeper\, kinglets\, Yellow-rumped and Pine Warblers\, and possibly Great Horned Owl. We will also check the grassy slopes next to the pond and recycling center for sparrows and other grassland birds. There is a brief steeper uphill climb in one section of the trail\, so remember to wear proper footwear!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Squantum Point Park (Early Birders Series)
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED TODAY. The leader is feeling ill and can’t make it.  \nJoin fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Squantum Point Park! Located in northern Quincy along the coast\, Squantum Point is a former naval airfield turned birding hotspot in the Boston vicinity. Thanks to the variety of habitats found in the park\, it provides unique opportunities to get great looks at migrating species! As we navigate the park\, expect to see resident species\, lingering coastal ducks\, and spring migrants (shorebirds)! \nDress for the weather! If it is a forecast to be a windy day\, expect higher winds as we will be along the coast. Expect to walk approximately 1-2 miles on paved/dirt paths and potentially sand. We will likely do some stationary birding on the coast if the weather is nice. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners are available on request (please email the trip leader). \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. Please do not bring children. \nWe will meet at the entrance to the park in the south portion (left end as you enter)  of the large parking lot at the end of Miwra Haul Rd. Do not be concerned if parts of the lot are closed with orange cones\, the police frequently use the parking lot for training exercises. If you have any concerns\, feel free to contact the trip leader. Meeting location coordinates: 42.29854\, -71.03420. \nThere is plenty of public parking at the meeting location. Public transit access to Squantum Point is limited. If you are taking the T via the red line\, you can get off at North Quincy and either catch a 211 bus to the E Squantum St opp Heath St stop and walk the 25 minutes to the parking lot or walk straight from the North Quincy station to the park (~45 mins). DESCRIPTION:Please join us on April 24 for our Annual Members Meeting. The evening begins with a social hour at 6:30. The program starts at 7:30 with the BBC’s annual business meeting and the election of new officers and board members. Once we have concluded with club business and announcements we will go the evening’s speaker. \nThis meeting is open to all and held at the Harvard Geological Lecture Hall at 24 Oxford Street in Cambridge. (This is next door to the Museum of Comparative Zoology.) \nConcerned about parking? Don’t Be!! Starting at 5:30 PM there will be free parking for all at the Harvard Oxford Street Garage entered off Oxford Street across from Everett Street. Just tell the attendant that you will be going to the BBC meeting. \nWhile we hope that you will be able to join us in person there will also be a Zoom link for those who cannot make it into Cambridge. \nIntroducing the BBC’s 2026 Species of Concern – The Bobolink\nAt the meeting we will kick off a new BBC initiative\, our annual Species of Concern. Each year we will designate a bird that is facing challenges in Massachusetts. \nFor 2026 our Species of Concern will be the Bobolink\, a grassland bird that faces challenges across the state. You will learn about the Bobolink during the evening’s lecture – see more below – and you will hear about field trips and other activities to learn about and support the Bobolink. \nLecture: Bobolinks on the Brink: What do Bobolinks Tell Us about Our Relationship with the Land\, and How Can We Protect Them?\nHyla Howe\, Grassland Bird Biologist at Mass Audubon and Program Manager for the Bobolink Project will join the Brookline Bird Club to discuss our first endangered species spotlight: the Bobolink! \nMass Audubon’s Grassland Bird Biologist will join the Brookline Bird Club to discuss our first endangered species spotlight: the Bobolink! Bobolink populations are closely intertwined with shifting land use patterns and agricultural practices\, and conservation solutions to protect them are complex. Hyla will share observations from the field\, insights from conversations with farmers and landowners\, takeaways from efforts to improve and scale the Bobolink Project\, and results from a regional land use change analysis to describe where bobolink conservation stands today\, and what you can do to help. \nAbout the Speaker\nHyla Howe is Mass Audubon’s Grassland Bird Biologist and the Program Manager for the Bobolink Project. Hyla received her M.S. from the University of Vermont\, where she studied grassland birds and hayfield management in New York’s Champlain Valley. She is still based in Vermont\, where she works closely with farmers\, landowners\, and regional partners to scale bird-friendly hayfield management efforts across five states. DESCRIPTION:A 3 to 4 mile walk along level gravel paths along the woods edge\, old cranberry bogs and reservoir. We will search for the locally breeding Sandhill Cranes and early migrants. The American Bittern is more often heard than seen and waterfowl should be plentiful.

SUMMARY:Beaver Brook Farm\, Dracut
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through various habitats such as mature woodland\, freshwater marsh\, and open fields as we look and listen for spring migrants and resident breeding birds at this beautiful piece of property preserved by the town of Dracut. We should be able to find a good variety of species that need these islands of native vegetation to fuel up on their way to their breeding grounds or to stay and raise the next generation. The trail is less than a mile in length but is uneven in spots and portions could be muddy so sturdy footwear is a must. Cosponsored by the Dracut Open Space Committee

SUMMARY:Weston Station Pond and nearby Mass Central Rail Trail
DESCRIPTION:Discover a quiet hotspot with miles of trails and a lot of birds! The diversity of habitats in and around Weston Station Pond make it a great spot to look for migrants in late April ranging from warblers to waterfowl to shorebirds to others. In addition\, a Great Blue Heron rookery ensures that even if it’s a quiet day for migration that there will be something awe inspiring to look at. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on a combination of dirt and paved trails. Dirt trails could be muddy depending on conditions. There are no restrooms available at this location.
