SUMMARY:Webinar: Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders
DESCRIPTION:The book Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders reveals the marvel of how birds work—from the tips of their beaks to the sheen of their tail feathers. Consider feathers: They define birds’ wings\, enabling flight. They insulate against cold. They repel water. They even control sound. And how feathers work is just one aspect of the wonders of birds explained by MIT engineering professor and lifelong birder Lorna Gibson in Birds Up Close. \nFeathers\, bones\, bills\, eggs\, flight: all come in for scrutiny in this engaging book. What produces the iridescence of plumage? How does the internal structure of a bird’s bones make them lightweight? How do different birds use their bills and tongues—from woodpeckers penetrating the holes they drill to hummingbirds imbibing nectar\, to sandpipers needling the sand\, and to phalaropes drawing water droplets containing plankton into their mouths without sucking (no lips!)? What controls the shape of eggs? How do birds fly? \nIntrigued? Join us on 10/20 to learn more \nTo register you must be a BBC member. Please log in to your member account and heard over to the Member Resources page under the MEMBERS menu. \nNot a member but want to listen in? Please join us! You will get access to a range of member benefits and support the local birding community.

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Fresh Pond Reservation (Early Birders Series) CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Canceled due to the leader being unavailable.\nLook for future trips with Wyatt leading. \n  \n  \nJoin fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Fresh Pond Reservation! Located in the northwest part of Cambridge\, Fresh Pond is home to 162 acres of space consisting of forests\, meadows\, wetlands\, and open water. As we navigate our way around the 2.5 mile park loop trail\, expect to see all kinds of songbirds\, waterbirds\, and fall migrants (especially ducks & warblers!) as we embrace peak Fall migration time in Massachusetts!\nIf you’re interested\, stick around afterwards and we may walk over to Mount Auburn Cemetery for more birding depending on the conditions.\nWhether you’re a newcomer looking to start a new hobby or are a seasoned bird expert\, birders of all experience levels in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to join! Let’s connect through our mutual appreciation for birds and the environment! Hope to see you there!\nDress for the weather conditions; bring water! Expect to walk approximately 3 miles on mostly paved/level paths. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners are available on request (please email the trip leader ahead of time). Port-a-potties are available at the ranger station on the south side of the park. \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. Please do not bring children. \nPlan to meet at the first intersection south of the park entrance across the street from 603 Concord Ave. You will be in the right place if you are approaching an open area (Lusitania Field). Meeting location coordinates: 42.38801\, -71.14504. \nParking meters on Cambridge streets are generally free and without a duration limit on Sunday. Be sure to read the sign – “Except Sunday” means you are fine. Metered parking on Wheeler St and Faucet St shuld be free. There is also parking on Huron Ave on the sourthern edge of the resercvation. Some parking there or elsewhere will be marked as resident only but most of those spots will say “Except Sunday” (be sure to read the sign) and that really does mean you can park there on Sunday.\nThe Alewife T station has paid parking and is a walk 15 minutes to the meeting location. \nPublic transit:Getting off at the Concord Ave/Wheeler St stop on the 74 or 78 bus is the most direct option for getting close to the meeting location. Walking the 15 minutes south from the Alewife T station (via Red Line) is the best alternative. https://www.mbta.com/trip-planner can help you plan and to make sure your ride is running on Sunday. \nIf you have any questions\, reach out to the trip leader!

SUMMARY:Bear Creek Sanctuary (on behalf of Soheil Zendeh and WINWaste)
DESCRIPTION:Bear Creek is an upland sanctuary built on the WINWaste (formerly Wheelabrator) landfill at the northeast corner of Rumney Marsh in Saugus and Revere. Access information is below. Wear waterproof walking shoes and be prepared to hike 3 – 4 miles. The property is mostly very open\, so be prepared for sun\, wind and weather.\n\nThis walk is free and open to the public\, but also note that this property is accessible by invitation only and visitors need to be chaperoned at all times. Please allow roughly 4 hours for this field trip. The actual length of the trip depends on conditions and the birds present. It’s usually difficult to break up the party if you need to be somewhere in the early afternoon. Come prepared to stay with the group.\n\nWINWaste company has graciously stocked up on some extra pairs of binoculars\, so if you or someone you know wants to learn about birds and birding\, come on down. Please let Geoff Wilson s2ary@comcast.net know you’re coming so we can have a head count.\n\nBear Creek Sanctuary access is via the WINWaste plant\, 100 Salem Turnpike (Rte 107)\, Saugus. The rotary at the intersection of Rtes 60 and 107 is about 1½ miles southwest of the plant and about 1 mile east of Rte 1 exit on Rte 60. When traveling northeast on 107\, if you go over the Ballard Street bridge (just after a set of lights) you’ve gone too far — turn back. Here is a link to google maps: http://tinyurl.com/326v87d.\n\n When you arrive\, drive through the plant gates\, park in the parking lot immediately and wait for the group. Please do not drive farther into the property without an escort.
