DESCRIPTION:Join us on November 7 for our hybrid in-person/webinar fall meeting with speaker Amar Ayyash\, author of The Gull Guide. There will be a social hour starting at 6:30 and the meeting itself will start at 7:00PM. Free parking at Harvard’s 52 Oxford Street Garage starting at 5:30PM.  The garage is entered across from the intersection of Oxford and Everett Streets. \nRegister for the Zoom webinar broadcast of the meeting. \nAmong the world’s “seabirds\,” gulls are the most accessible to humans\, invading our most immediate surroundings. Gulls are sometimes perceived as second class avian creatures. This\, along with the identification challenges they present and their readiness to hybridize\, creates a love-hate relationship for many birders. Yet some gull species are among the most coveted birds on any birder’s list (think Ross’s Gull and Ivory Gull). This makes for an interesting juxtaposition. Do we like some gulls and look past others? \nAmar Ayyash is both an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for “gull recreation.” He coordinates the IOS Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan\, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com\, and he speaks at birding events throughout the continent. Much of his free time is dedicated to traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. DESCRIPTION:Join Mass. Audubon and the Brookline Bird Club to observe resident birds and fall migrants in a unique urban habitat that is a favorite for many bird species\, including uncommon and rare birds. Target birds include blackbirds\, grosbeaks\, herons\, kingfishers\, kinglets\, owls\, rails\, ravens & crows\, sandpipers\, and woodpeckers & sapsuckers. Birders of all levels will enjoy this trip. The trails are flat and easy to walk. We may offer optional 30-60 minute trip extensions to adjacent locations such as West Roxbury High School Marsh and/or Brook Farm. \nThe walk is free but preregistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Join fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Arnold Arboretum! Located in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Boston\, Arnold Arboretum is a 281-acre public preserve home to an extensive collection of flora from across the globe. As we navigate through the park’s hills and gardens\, expect to see late fall residents & migrants (keep an eye out for warblers!). We have no set path for this trip and will follow our eyes and ears to find the birdiest spots in the park. \nWhether you’re a newcomer looking to start a new hobby or are a seasoned bird expert\, birders of all experience levels in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to join! Let’s connect through our mutual appreciation for birds and the environment! Hope to see you there! \nDress for the weather conditions! Expect to walk on mostly paved or gravel paths through hills. We will start our walk near South Street Gate and visit Bussey Hill and Peter’s Hill. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners are available on request (please email the trip leader ahead of time). \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those in their 20s and 30s. Please do not bring children. \nPlan to meet at the intersection of Hemlock Hill Rd and Valley Rd inside the park (near South Street Gate across the street from Bussey Brook Meadow). Meeting location coordinates: 42.29791\, -71.12277. \nParking: Free parking is available along the Arborway\, Flora Way\, and Walter Street. \nTransit Directions: Arnold Arboretum is accessible via the T’s Orange Line (Forest Hills) and various bus routes. See the MBTA’s bus map for bus routes. Once you arrive at Forest Hills\, make sure you enter the park via South Street or Forest Hill Rd and follow either of these roads until you reach Beech Path. Follow Beech Path until it terminates and you will be at the meeting location. There is currently construction at the Washington Street entrance and so that path is temporarily closed.
