Birders of all levels will enjoy this trip. The trails are flat and easy to walk. We may offer optional 30-60 minute trip extensions to adjacent locations such as West Roxbury High School Marsh and/or Brook Farm. \nThe walk is free but preregistration is required. Duck boats\, skate park\, and good transit connections make it lively\, but there’s good green space along the river\, and a decent number of species show up here. DESCRIPTION:Everybody enjoys watching birds during the daytime\, but what do they do at night\, when they seem to disappear? Birds need sleep as much as we do\, and they have evolved unique sleep habits to match their intensely energetic lifestyle. Instead of long stretches of obliviousness\, they sleep in short bouts of several seconds or a few minutes\, waking up to look around for danger\, and then going back to sleep. To increase their vigilance\, birds can sleep\, shutting off only half their brain and one eye at a time\, leaving them able to respond instantly to any alarm. The social habits of sleeping birds are also distinctive. Most are solitary\, some sleep in pairs or families\, while others gain advantages of warmth\, safety\, and even social needs like finding a mate\, by joining in flocks\, not to mention guidance on where to get breakfast the next day. \nLearn more and register for the webinar.

DESCRIPTION:In the fall water levels are lowered creating good conditions for ducks and shorebirds. We will also visit the adjacent Lexington community farm. Birds are found feasting on the remains of the crops planted there. We will walk about a mile on wide paths and some uneven ground (possibly muddy). DESCRIPTION:A nice little city park on the Charles River that flies under the radar. Duck boats\, skate park\, and good transit connections make it lively\, but there’s good green space along the river\, and a decent number of species show up here. It’s underbirded\, so who knows what might show up? Expect to walk on flat\, paved paths with no elevation gain. Walk will probably be one to two km.
