SUMMARY:Weston Station Pond and nearby Mass Central Rail Trail (Rescheduled from Saturday 5/31)
DESCRIPTION:Important: if the rain is still steady on Sunday morning\, the trip is canceled. Contact the leader if uncertain. Expect wet conditions – bring waterproof footwear. To reach the bike path\, we will bypass a huge puddle that blocks the way by a side path (up a short moderately steep hill and then passing near a Weston water treatment facility). \nA good variety of birds\, Great Blue Heron colony\, chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. SUMMARY:Pawtucket Farm Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Lowell Parks & Conservation Trust in association with Massachusetts Audubon\, Mill City Grows and the City of Lowell has preserved this former Christmas tree farm on Varnum Avenue with the intent of providing open space for residents and visitors to explore and enjoy. An all-persons trail ensures the property is accessible to everyone. We will look and listen for birds that also appreciate the protection of this space\, whether they are migrating to their final breeding locations or staying to spend the summer. The walk will be leisurely with some mildly hilly sections on gravel trails. Co-sponsored by the Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust and limited to 20 participants. DESCRIPTION:Assabet River National Wildlife Refuge contains a diverse mixture of pine and hardwood forest\, old fields\, and wetlands. We will walk 2-3 miles on even\, well-maintained trails in search of warblers\, raptors\, flycatchers and a variety of other migrants and residents. Can be buggy – insect repellent recommended. We will plan on making a short drive to a second parking area for a look at Assabet’s Great Blue Heron Rookery. Restrooms and/or Port-a-potties are available at both parking areas.

DESCRIPTION:Join fellow birders in their 20s-30s for a special entry into the Early Birder series as we visit Belle Isle Marsh & the nearby Winthrop/Revere area! Nestled between Orient Heights\, Beachmont\, and Winthrop\, the salt marsh of Belle Isle is host to a wide variety of unique bird species. As we navigate the northern portion of the park\, expect to see your typical songbirds & coastal birds\, but also shorebirds and other migrants. There’s no other place like it! Following our time at Belle Isle\, we plan to carpool to the nearby beaches at Winthrop and/or Revere for more shorebirding action! If we’re lucky\, we will get to observe Piping Plovers nesting on the beaches! \nWhether you’re a newcomer looking to start a new hobby or are a seasoned bird expert\, birders of all experience levels in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to join! Let’s connect through our mutual appreciation for birds and the environment! Hope to see you there! \nMake sure to dress in clothes that cover your skin to avoid mosquito bites; bring water & bug spray! The mosquitos at Belle Isle can be nasty! Expect to walk approximately 3 miles on mostly level paths & beaches. Binoculars are highly recommended. If you need loaner binoculars\, they are available upon request (please email the trip leader ahead of time). Port-a-potties are available at the meeting location. \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. We encourage carpooling and will be carpooling those who are interested. \nTransit access to the park is available via the Blue Line Suffolk Downs T stop (10 minute walk away). DESCRIPTION:At our meeting spot\, special guest Dr. Bryan Windmiller of Zoo New England will talk about the endangered Blanding’s turtles that call Great Meadows home. Then we will head out to see what turtles\, birds\, and mammals and other wildlife we can observe on the refuge. This walk is intended for kids ages 8+ with an accompanying adult. This walk will be in the Concord area. \nPossibility of live Blanding’s Turtle viewing (but no guarantee)! \nRegistration is required for this walk to maintain a positive group experience! SUMMARY:Maine - Machias Region
DESCRIPTION:Join us on our annual trip to Machias area in Downeast Maine. The highlight of the trip is a boat trip to Machias Seal Island for Atlantic Puffins and other alcids\, weather permitting. We also tour beautiful coastlands and boreal forests in search of nesting warblers and other species. We explore the blueberry barrens\, and coastal wetlands for other species such as Sandhill Crane\, Black Terns\, Nelson’s Sparrow\, Upland Sandpiper\, and potential rarities. \nNOTE ON LIMITED MOBILITY: We don’t have any technical or rugged hiking\, however we are on our feet a lot looking for boreal species\, which can add up to several miles of walking per day. The boat landing on Machias can be slippery and treacherous\, but participants can safely stay on the boat and still encounter all the breeding birds at close range if they are concerned about the landing. \nThis trip is limited to 13 participants. The trip fee will be $350 for BBC members\, $370 otherwise. Details sent in response to inquiries. Please contact Henry to inquire about availability or being added to the wait list.

DESCRIPTION:In June\, this wonderfully preserved grassland is alive with the songs of breeding Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrow\, which are state listed as endangered species. Prairie Warbler\, Indigo Bunting\, and American Kestrels nest regularly here as well. A mile walk on level grade; can be dry so bring water.

SUMMARY:Belle Isle Marsh Marine Ecology Park\, Winthrop
DESCRIPTION:Join the Brookline Bird Club in collaboration with Boston Nature Center to look for birds in a unique urban habitat that often draws numerous uncommon and rare birds. Target species include bobolinks\, dunlin\, egrets\, falcons\, hawks\, herons\, ibis\, oystercatchers\, plovers\, ravens\, sandpipers\, sparrows\, swallows & swifts\, terns\, warblers\, vultures\, and yellowlegs. Birders of all levels will enjoy this walk The trails are flat and easy to walk. We may offer an optional 30-60 minute trip extension to nearby locations such as Lewis Lake or Short Beach. \nThe walk is free but preregistration is required. Please preregister by emailing cgeorge@massaudubon.org and copying neil.calabro1@mac.com. Registration is limited to 30 people. Be sure to wear a hat and waterproof footwear and pack water. Insect repellent and sunblock are recommended.
