SUMMARY:Bring Back Boblinks: Bobolinks at Heard Farm\, Wayland (New!)
DESCRIPTION:New addition to our Bring Back Bobolinks conservation series. \nThis gem works its way into the rotations of many birders once discovered. It is managed for dog walking (no dogs on this walk please) and bobolinks\, which in a good year can number 100 or more. We will be using dirt trails and boardwalks. Trails can be muddy depending on recent weather. Decent luck should bring 30 to 50 species depending migration and whether all routes are accessible\, including a variety of warblers\, ducks\, waders and raptors. \nPull over if you can on Pelham Island Rd on the way to view the waders and ducks and maybe raptors in or near the pond on the left.

SUMMARY:Popup for Bridled Tern at Scituate Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:We’re offering this popup trip for the Bridled Tern. We will limit the trip because of concerns about available parking and group size being too large. Please informally register by sending email to fieldtrips@brooklinebirdclub.org. If you are carpooling\, please send one email for the whole car. We’ll count you as one person since parking is our biggest concern. We’ll send you a reply email Wednesday evening confirming that we have room for you. We will also use your email to send a cancellation if we think the bird has left the area. \nYou can go to the lighthouse pretty much anytime for a chance of seeing this bird and we encourage that too. There are likely to be other birders there to help you find it. The Bridled Tern is being seen frequently there. If you have a scope\, you may spot it further off and possibly drive to a better vantage point. This is not a hard bird to see if you are patient and it hasn’t left. We don’t know how long it will be around. \nIf you have a scope or a telephoto camera\, we encourage you to bring it. \nThe meeting spot is the Scituate lighthouse parking lot. The attached google map has a point you can use for directions. You can just enter Scituate Lighthouse in your favorite navigation app and it should be fine. \nIt is a pretty good spot for limited mobility. It depends on where the bird is. There’s a good chance it can be seen from flat paved ground reachable from the paved parking lot with a couple of handicapped spots. Sometimes it requires walking some short distance on a beach to see it though. Not perfect\, but limited mobility persons are welcome. \n

SUMMARY:Members Webinar: Introduction to the New England Shorebird Guide
DESCRIPTION:For over 50 years\, Soheil Zendeh has been monitoring shorebirds populations in Massachusetts and elsewhere. Over the past 35 years there have been drastic drops in most shorebird populations\, particularly long distance migratory birds from the Arctic. He is the author of New England Shorebird Guide\, a web-based field guide for New England shorebirders focused on helping introductory to medium level observers. His field guide is hosted on the Bird Observer website. \nThis webinar will discuss data from past years compared to current numbers\, and talk about the difficulties of monitoring these birds considering their far-flung trajectories – nesting in the arctic\, migrating through coastal and inland wetlands\, wintering in Central and South America. It will also discuss the difficulties of keeping up with shorebird plumage changes through the seasons. The goal of this webinar is to help build a constituency for these birds in order to enhance conservation measures for the ones that need help. \nFor more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Mount Auburn in Summer
DESCRIPTION:Mt. Auburn Cemetery is most heavily visited during migration season\, but birding there in the summer allows you to see the large number of vibrant breeding birds without the crowds. Expect to see herons\, vireos\, flycatchers\, and raptors\, which may include some Great Horned Owls if we are lucky. Birders and nature-lovers of all skill levels are welcome. The walk will be about a mile in the summer heat with some elevation\, so bring sun protection\, water\, appropriate footwear\, and binoculars. \nMeet: Outside Story Chapel (580 Mt. Auburn St)\, which is the red sandstone building that looks like a chapel near the cemetery entrance (inside the cemetery). \nThe Cemetery gates open fairly promptly at 8am and you can usually park on Lawn Ave. where it circles the Asa Gray Garden. That is very near the meeting spot. Parking is allowed on any road that doesn’t have a green center line. Park completely on asphalt\, not touching the grass. \nPublic transportation and bicycling are fine ways to reach the cemetery. There are racks for your bikes inside the gates. https://www.mbta.com/trip-planner is an easy way to find a route on the T and the trip planner can give you a route that takes into account weekend schedules and temporarily closed train lines.
