DESCRIPTION:A short\, two mile loop over slightly hilly trails looking for resident woodland birds and early migrants\, namely Hairy Woodpecker\, Brown Creeper\, kinglets\, Yellow-rumped and Pine Warblers\, and possibly Great Horned Owl. We will also check the grassy slopes next to the pond and recycling center for sparrows and other grassland birds. There is a brief steeper uphill climb in one section of the trail\, so remember to wear proper footwear!

SUMMARY:CANCELLED Squantum Point Park (Early Birders Series)
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED TODAY. The leader is feeling ill and can’t make it.  \nJoin fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Squantum Point Park! Located in northern Quincy along the coast\, Squantum Point is a former naval airfield turned birding hotspot in the Boston vicinity. Thanks to the variety of habitats found in the park\, it provides unique opportunities to get great looks at migrating species! As we navigate the park\, expect to see resident species\, lingering coastal ducks\, and spring migrants (shorebirds)! \nDress for the weather! If it is a forecast to be a windy day\, expect higher winds as we will be along the coast. Expect to walk approximately 1-2 miles on paved/dirt paths and potentially sand. We will likely do some stationary birding on the coast if the weather is nice. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners are available on request (please email the trip leader). \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. Please do not bring children. \nWe will meet at the entrance to the park in the south portion (left end as you enter)  of the large parking lot at the end of Miwra Haul Rd. Do not be concerned if parts of the lot are closed with orange cones\, the police frequently use the parking lot for training exercises. If you have any concerns\, feel free to contact the trip leader. Meeting location coordinates: 42.29854\, -71.03420. \nThere is plenty of public parking at the meeting location. Public transit access to Squantum Point is limited. If you are taking the T via the red line\, you can get off at North Quincy and either catch a 211 bus to the E Squantum St opp Heath St stop and walk the 25 minutes to the parking lot or walk straight from the North Quincy station to the park (~45 mins). Expect to see a variety of woodpeckers\, resident birds\, warblers\, and other migratory species\, as well as a surprise or two. The path is flat with a mix of gravel and dirt surfaces with newly added boardwalks on the wetter sections. Boots are strongly advised. A visit to nearby Peter’s Hill in the Arboretum is an option afterwards if others feel inclined.

In addition\, a Great Blue Heron rookery ensures that even if it’s a quiet day for migration that there will be something awe inspiring to look at. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on a combination of dirt and paved trails. Dirt trails could be muddy depending on conditions. There are no restrooms available at this location.

SUMMARY:Bring Back Boblinks: Bobolinks at Heard Farm\, Wayland
DESCRIPTION:Part of our Bring Back Boblinks conservation series. \nThis gem works its way into the rotations of many birders once discovered. It is managed for dog walking (no dogs on this walk please) and bobolinks\, which in agood year can number 100 or more. We will be using dirt trails and boardwalks. Ttrails can be muddy depending on recent weather. Decent luck should bring 30 to 50 species depending migration and whether all routes are accessible\, including a variety of warblers\, ducks\, waders and raptors. \nPull over if you can on Pelham Island Rd on the way to view the waders and ducks and maybe raptors in or near the pond on the left.

DESCRIPTION:A small but mighty urban wild that offers a variety of habitat. Expect to see a variety of woodpeckers\, resident birds\, warblers\, and other migratory species\, as well as a surprise or two. The path is flat with a mix of gravel and dirt surfaces with newly added boardwalks on the wetter sections. Boots are strongly advised. A visit to nearby Peter’s Hill in the Arboretum is an option afterwards if others feel inclined.

SUMMARY:Caratunk Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Just two miles from the Rhode Island border\, Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk\, MA offers six miles of nature hiking trails through nearly 200 acres of fields\, forests\, streams and ponds. A Purple Martin colony can be observed nesting in the gourds in the main field. Trails are easy to moderate in difficulty. Expect 2.5 to 3 miles of walking at Caratunk. (This is a joint walk with the Paskamansett Bird Club). An optional walk after the Caratunk Wildlife Sanctuary walk will be at Gammino Pond Conservation Area\, 463 Newman Ave.\, Seekonk\, MA. (1.5 miles from Caratunk). Gammino Pond features an easy walk on a wide one mile dirt trail that meanders around the pond. A recommendation is to pack your lunch.
