SUMMARY:Winter Birds along the Concord River Greenway\, Lowell
DESCRIPTION:The Concord River in winter can be a rich spot for birds as it tumbles and meanders toward its confluence with the Merrimack. This walk is suitable for beginners and those with limited mobility as the path is flat and paved but as this is winter\, be prepared for the weather and potentially icy/snowy footing. Cosponsored by Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust and limited to 20 participants. Preregister at: https://lowelllandtrust.org/category/events/

SUMMARY:Open to All Webinar: At Sea in the Humboldt Current – Ship Life\, Pelagic Birds\, and Deep Sea Creatures\, with Scott Weiman
DESCRIPTION:Embark on an evening of discovery as marine geochemist Scott Wieman recounts a recent month-long research expedition aboard the R/V Falkor(too) from Valparaíso to Puerto Montt\, Chile. Scott’s talk blends his experiences birding the highly productive Humboldt current with the broader expedition’s exploration of numerous methane cold seeps and submarine canyons along the Chilean Margin. In addition to sharing photographs of the diverse pelagic bird life encountered and recounting his exciting sightings – including the first Murphy’s Petrel within 1000 miles of the Chilean mainland and seven different albatross species – Scott will provide a fascinating glimpse into daily life aboard an oceanographic research vessel\, the remarkably unique deep-sea life observed\, and how dissolved methane measurements can reveal key processes in marine carbon cycling. \nAbout the presenter: Scott Wieman is a PhD Candidate in Marine Geochemistry and Ocean Instrumentation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He cannot pinpoint exactly when his passion for birding began\, but there is a photograph of him at ~1 year old lying on the floor in a diaper with the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America open to the plate with the Blue Jay…upside down. While his research path has been highly nonlinear\, ranging from theoretical chemistry to environmental law and from the ocean depths to the surface of Mars\, he has specifically maintained birding as an avid hobby and never a research direction. \nFormat: Zoom Webinar\nTo Register: Zoom Registration Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_ou7lokIqQTukY7DYiOmVxA

SUMMARY:Open to All Webinar: The Corvid’s World\, with John Marzluff
DESCRIPTION:How have corvids mastered city life\, learned human faces and learned to use tools? What settings and experiments help humans understand some parallels between human and crow cognition? Corvids—the ubiquitous crows\, ravens\, magpies\, jays\, nutcrackers\, and relatives—are familiar backyard birds with extraordinary behaviors that enable them to thrive where most species cannot. John Marzluff will share his 40-plus years of research and findings\, as well as his current work in Yellowstone Park. \nAbout the presenter: John Marzluff is Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington\, the author and editor of many books and articles. . His research has been the focus of articles in the New York Times\, National Geographic\, Audubon\, Boys Life\, The Seattle Times\, National Wildlife\, Consumer Reports\, Time\, and Science. PBS’s NATURE featured his raven research in its production\, “Ravens”; and his crow research in the film documentary\, “A Murder of Crows” His current research focuses on the interactions of ravens and wolves in Yellowstone. He teaches field ecology courses at the University of Washington and for Yellowstone Forever. \nFormat: Zoom Webinar\nTo Register: Zoom Registration Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_zLRKKIY5TE-POMPkiCg6SQ

SUMMARY:Annual Meeting & Lecture: South Asian Vultures: Crisis & Conservation - ALL ARE WELCOME
DESCRIPTION:Not too long ago\, the millions of vultures in South Asia were so common that no one had bothered to count them. Until the 1990s\, when populations of three Gyps vultures collapsed by more than 97 per cent in a decade. It was the fastest avian decline ever recorded. Conservationists scrambled to find the cause and start captive breeding programs. What happens when South Asia’s essential clean-up crew vanishes? Join us to learn more about this environmental lesson for all. \nPresenter Bio: Meera Subramanian is an award-winning freelance journalist and National Geographic Explorer whose work has been published in Nature\, The New York Times\, The NewYorker.com\, Audubon\, and many others; she is a contributing editor of Orion. She is the author of A River Runs Again: India’s Natural World in Crisis\, which was short-listed for the Orion Book Award. Based on a glacial moraine on the edge of the Atlantic\, she’s a perpetual wanderer who can’t stop planting perennials. You can find her at www.meerasub.org. \nA social hour will precede the meeting and start at 6:30. \nZoom Registration Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_s3IWfA6YRl-mDdzSDORL4A

SUMMARY:Yapp Farm\, Dracut\, MA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through various habitats such as mature woodland\, freshwater marsh\, and open fields as we look and listen for spring migrants and resident breeding birds at this beautiful piece of property preserved by the town of Dracut. We should be able to find a good variety of species that need these islands of native vegetation to fuel up on their way to their breeding grounds or to stay and raise the next generation. The trail is less than a mile in length but is uneven in spots and portions could be muddy so sturdy footwear is a must. Co-sponsored by the Dracut Open Space Committee
