SUMMARY:Roslindale Wetlands Urban Park
DESCRIPTION:A small but mighty urban wild that offers a variety of habitat. Expect to see a variety of woodpeckers\, resident birds\, warblers\, and other migratory species\, as well as a surprise or two. The path is flat with a mix of gravel and dirt surfaces with newly added boardwalks on the wetter sections. Boots are strongly advised. A visit to nearby Peter’s Hill in the Arboretum is an option afterwards if others feel inclined.

SUMMARY:Late Spring Migrants at Minute Man NHP
DESCRIPTION:Join me at this wonderful birding spot which hosts many nesting species and migrants. Blue-winged Warbler\, American Redstart\, and Indigo Buntings are regular nesters. Each year brings a few surprises in late May. In past years\, around this date\, these have included Alder Flycatcher\, Yellow-throated Vireo\, Kentucky Warbler\, and both cuckoos. This is a one-mile walk on both paved paths and wooded trails which may be muddy.

The diversity of habitats in and around Weston Station Pond make it a great spot to look for migrants in May ranging from warblers to waterfowl to shorebirds to others. In addition\, a Great Blue Heron rookery ensures that even if it’s a quiet day for migration that there will be something awe inspiring to look at. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on a combination of dirt and paved trails. Dirt trails could be muddy depending on conditions. There are no restrooms available at this location.

DESCRIPTION:Trying for 50 species again this year\, we’ll be walking about a mile and a half\, mostly staying on pavement. Boots are not required. Ticks should not be a problem. We’ll be looking and listening for swamp breeders\, including Green Heron\, Brown Creeper\, Northern Waterthrush\, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. We may then stop at the Medfield State Hospital fields for grassland and successional breeding birds. We could also make additional stops in Medfield as time allows.

SUMMARY:Belle Isle Marsh & Winthrop Beach (Early Birders Series)
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Belle Isle Marsh & the nearby Winthrop/Revere area! Nestled between Orient Heights\, Beachmont\, and Winthrop\, the salt marsh of Belle Isle is host to a wide variety of unique bird species. As we navigate the northern portion of the park\, expect to see your typical songbirds & coastal birds\, but also shorebirds and other migrants. There’s no other place like it! Following our time at Belle Isle\, we plan to carpool to the nearby beaches at Winthrop and/or Revere for more shorebirding action! If we’re lucky\, we will get to observe Piping Plovers nesting on the beaches! \nWhether you’re a newcomer looking to start a new hobby or are a seasoned bird expert\, birders of all experience levels in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to join! Hope to see you there! \nMake sure to dress in clothes that cover your skin to avoid mosquito bites; bring water & bug spray! The mosquitos at Belle Isle can be nasty! Expect to walk approximately 3 miles on mostly level paths & beaches. Binoculars are highly recommended. If you need loaner binoculars\, they are available upon request (please email the trip leader ahead of time). Port-a-potties are available at the meeting location. \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. Please do not bring children. \nPlan to meet in the parking lot of Belle Isle Marsh off of Bennington St at 9 AM (1399 Bennington St\, Boston\, MA 02128). A combined walk with Brookline Bird Club and Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust. \nBobolinks are migratory grassland birds found across Massachusetts. The Bobolink is listed as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Massachusetts and faces global declines driven by habitat loss and early mowing practices that destroy nests\, making coordinated land management essential for its conservation. \nDNRT’s Ocean View Farm Reserve is a breeding habitat for Bobolinks. Join us as we observe them tending to their young in the fields at this scenic property. Trails are easy.

SUMMARY:Pine Hill Road Grassland
DESCRIPTION:In June\, this wonderfully preserved grassland is alive with the songs of breeding Grasshopper and Vesper Sparrow\, which are state listed as endangered species. Prairie Warbler\, Indigo Bunting\, and American Kestrels nest regularly here as well. A mile walk on level grade; can be dry so bring water.
