Expect to see a variety of woodpeckers\, resident birds\, warblers\, and other migratory species\, as well as a surprise or two. The path is flat with a mix of gravel and dirt surfaces with newly added boardwalks on the wetter sections. Boots are strongly advised. A visit to nearby Peter’s Hill in the Arboretum is an option afterwards if others feel inclined.

The diversity of habitats in and around Weston Station Pond make it a great spot to look for migrants in May ranging from warblers to waterfowl to shorebirds to others. In addition\, a Great Blue Heron rookery ensures that even if it’s a quiet day for migration that there will be something awe inspiring to look at. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on a combination of dirt and paved trails. Dirt trails could be muddy depending on conditions. There are no restrooms available at this location.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll explore and look for early migrants and residents along the Walking City Trail in the Stony Brook Reservation in the heart of Boston\, in collaboration with Boston Birding Festival and Walking City Trail. Expect about 2 miles miles on trails that will be difficult in places. The trails can be rocky\, have exposed roots\, and somewhat steep. They can also be muddy if it has rained recently. New birders welcome. We will have some binoculars to lend. In addition BBF requires a waiver (made available through the registration process) which you should print and sign and bring with you. We will have waiver forms available if you forget.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a walk through various habitats such as mature woodland\, freshwater marsh\, and open fields as we look and listen for spring migrants and resident breeding birds at this beautiful piece of property preserved by the town of Dracut. We should be able to find a good variety of species that need these islands of native vegetation to fuel up on their way to their breeding grounds or to stay and raise the next generation. DESCRIPTION:How have corvids mastered city life\, learned human faces and learned to use tools? What settings and experiments help humans understand some parallels between human and crow cognition? Corvids—the ubiquitous crows\, ravens\, magpies\, jays\, nutcrackers\, and relatives—are familiar backyard birds with extraordinary behaviors that enable them to thrive where most species cannot. John Marzluff will share his 40-plus years of research and findings\, as well as his current work in Yellowstone Park. \nAbout the presenter: John Marzluff is Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington\, the author and editor of many books and articles. . His research has been the focus of articles in the New York Times\, National Geographic\, Audubon\, Boys Life\, The Seattle Times\, National Wildlife\, Consumer Reports\, Time\, and Science. PBS’s NATURE featured his raven research in its production\, “Ravens”; and his crow research in the film documentary\, “A Murder of Crows” His current research focuses on the interactions of ravens and wolves in Yellowstone.
