This unique grassland habitat is host to a rich variety of species\, including Eastern Meadowlark\, Grasshopper Sparrow\, Bobolink\, American Kestrel and possibly Blue Grosbeak. When we’re done at Crane\, we can cross the road and scan Coonamessett Field for raptor activity. Those wishing to can continue on to Mass Audubon’s Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary located just minutes from Crane.

To reach the bike path\, we will bypass a huge puddle that blocks the way by a side path (up a short moderately steep hill and then passing near a Weston water treatment facility). \nA good variety of birds\, Great Blue Heron colony\, chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. DESCRIPTION:Join fellow birders in their 20s-30s as we visit Fresh Pond Reservation! Located in the northwest part of Cambridge\, Fresh Pond is home to 162 acres of space consisting of forests\, meadows\, wetlands\, and open water. As we navigate our way around the 2.5 mile park loop trail\, expect to see all kinds of songbirds\, waterbirds\, and spring migrants (especially warblers!) as we reach peak migration time in Massachusetts! \nIf you’re interested\, stick around afterwards and we may walk over to Mount Auburn Cemetery for more birding! \nWhether you’re a newcomer looking to start a new hobby or are a seasoned bird expert\, birders of all experience levels in their 20s and 30s are encouraged to join! Let’s connect through our mutual appreciation for birds and the environment! Hope to see you there! \nDress for the weather conditions; bring water! Expect to walk approximately 3 miles on mostly paved/level paths. Bring binoculars if you have them; loaners are available on request (please email the trip leader ahead of time). Port-a-potties are available at the ranger station on the south side of the park. \nThis trip is specifically dedicated to those aged 20-39 years. Please do not bring children. \nPlan to meet at the first intersection south of the park entrance across the street from 603 Concord Ave. You will be in the right place if you are approaching an open area (Lusitania Field). Meeting location coordinates: 42.38801\, -71.14504. \nParking is available at designated areas at the southern edge of the park (Huron Ave.)\, but this is very limited. We can recommend parking at the Alewife T station and walking 15 minutes to the meeting location. Cambridge has strict parking restrictions and you may risk your car getting towed if you park elsewhere. There are some metered/time-limited parking spots on Wheeler St\, Fawcett St\, and Concord Ave. Don’t park in store lots (risk of towing). Cambridge residents with sticker can park in the Fresh Pond parking lots.

SUMMARY:Caratunk Wildlife Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:Just two miles from the Rhode Island border\, Caratunk Wildlife Refuge in Seekonk\, MA offers six miles of nature hiking trails through nearly 200 acres of fields\, forests\, streams and ponds. A Purple Martin colony can be observed nesting in the gourds in the main field. Trails are easy to moderate in difficulty. Expect 2.5 to 3 miles of walking at Caratunk. (This is a joint walk with the Paskamansett Bird Club). An optional walk after the Caratunk Wildlife Sanctuary walk will be at Gammino Pond Conservation Area\, 463 Newman Ave.\, Seekonk\, MA. (1.5 miles from Caratunk). Gammino Pond features an easy walk on a wide one mile dirt trail that meanders around the pond. A recommendation is to pack your lunch.

SUMMARY:Global Big Day Kickoff: Pine Hill Grasslands and Bolton Flats WMA
DESCRIPTION:We will visit Pine Hill Grasslands first (but meet at Bolton Flats for carpooling to Pine Hill)\, targeting grassland sparrows and warblers. We will walk at least 2.5 miles round trip but not all the way to the back of that reservation. Then off to the second stop\, Bolton Flats WMA off rt 117. There may be flooding here and very tall waterproof boots (aka Wellies\, rain boots) are likely needed. A scope would be useful\, especially at the second stop. Please email the leader (John Edmondson) if you plan to attend because there is limited parking at Pine Hill Grasslands. Early start for the big day.  In case or inclement weather forecast\, contact leader to find out about possible revised plan or cancelation.
