SUMMARY:Members Webinar with Tiffany Kirsten - Birdie Big Year: Elevating Women Birders
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES THIS WEBINAR HAS BEEN RESCHEDULED FROM MARCH 10 TO MARCH 24. IF YOU PREVIOUSLY SIGNED UP\, YOUR REGISTRATION AND ZOOM LINK WILL STILL WORK FOR THE MARCH 24 DATE. \nPlease join the BBC on the evening of March 24 from 7PM to 8:30PM for a member only webinar with Tiffany Kirsten\, entitled Birdie Big Year: Elevating Women Birders. \n\n\n\nTiffany Kersten didn’t set out to do a Big Year\, but after a series of unanticipated and serendipitous events\, she suddenly found herself amidst one. As a sexual assault survivor\, she spent 2021 traveling to all corners of the Lower 48 States\, tallying birds and gifting personal safety alarms to women she met along the way. Her goal was to see 700 species\, and to raise awareness of women’s safety in the outdoors. She ended up surpassing her goal and setting a new record\, of 726 species. In her presentation\, Tiffany will lead us through the fear\, empowerment\, struggles\, and healing that all played vital roles in the personal growth she experienced on this wild adventure. \nTo register you must be a BBC member. Please log in to your member account and heard over to the Member Resources page under MEMBERS menu. \nNot a member but want to listen in? Please join! SUMMARY:Webinar Open to All with Heather Packard\, Mass Audubon - Rescue Wildlife from Rodenticides
DESCRIPTION:Please join the BBC on the evening of Tuesday\, May 5 from 7PM to 8:30PM for a webinar with Heather Packard from the Massachusetts Audubon Society entitled Rescue Wildlife from Rodenticides. This webinar is open to all. \nRaptors\, coyotes\, and other predators balance Massachusetts’ ecosystems. But shocking numbers of these iconic creatures have been sickened and killed after eating poisoned rodents. Mass Audubon’s Rescue Raptors program supports groups in communities across Massachusetts to reduce the use of these poisons\, and wildlife advocates in many communities have been advocating to ban the use of these harmful poisons. \nJoin us to learn how rodent poisons harm wildlife and plans to reduce rodent poison use. Please register in advance for this webinar. After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. This event is sponsored by the Brookline Bird Club. Wildlife advocates from across the state are welcome! \nThis webinar will presented through Zoom. SUMMARY:Members Webinar: Introduction to the New England Shorebird Guide
DESCRIPTION:For over 50 years\, Soheil Zendeh has been monitoring shorebirds populations in Massachusetts and elsewhere. Over the past 35 years there have been drastic drops in most shorebird populations\, particularly long distance migratory birds from the Arctic. He is the author of New England Shorebird Guide\, a web-based field guide for New England shorebirders focused on helping introductory to medium level observers. His field guide is hosted on the Bird Observer website. \nThis webinar will discuss data from past years compared to current numbers\, and talk about the difficulties of monitoring these birds considering their far-flung trajectories – nesting in the arctic\, migrating through coastal and inland wetlands\, wintering in Central and South America. It will also discuss the difficulties of keeping up with shorebird plumage changes through the seasons. The goal of this webinar is to help build a constituency for these birds in order to enhance conservation measures for the ones that need help. \nFor more information and to register.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Introduction to Nocturnal Flight Call (NFC) Recording
DESCRIPTION:Most birders experience migration through the birds that arrive\, depart\, or pass overhead by day — but throughout the night\, another migration is unfolding largely out of sight. This presentation will introduce nocturnal flight calls and the recordists who use them to experience and study that hidden movement. We will draw on examples from the Northeast\, the history of bird sound recording\, and the broader development of NFC monitoring in North America. No technical background is needed: the goal is to open a window onto an extraordinary part of bird life happening above us while most of us are asleep\, while showing interested birders where they can go next if they want to listen or record for themselves. \n\nTo register you must be a BBC member. Please log in to your member account and heard over to the Member Resources page under the MEMBERS menu. \n\n\n\nNot a member but want to listen in? Please join us! You will get access to a range of member benefits and support the local birding community.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders
DESCRIPTION:The book Birds Up Close: An Engineer Explores Their Hidden Wonders reveals the marvel of how birds work—from the tips of their beaks to the sheen of their tail feathers. Consider feathers: They define birds’ wings\, enabling flight. They insulate against cold. They repel water. They even control sound. And how feathers work is just one aspect of the wonders of birds explained by MIT engineering professor and lifelong birder Lorna Gibson in Birds Up Close. \nFeathers\, bones\, bills\, eggs\, flight: all come in for scrutiny in this engaging book. What produces the iridescence of plumage? How does the internal structure of a bird’s bones make them lightweight? How do different birds use their bills and tongues—from woodpeckers penetrating the holes they drill to hummingbirds imbibing nectar\, to sandpipers needling the sand\, and to phalaropes drawing water droplets containing plankton into their mouths without sucking (no lips!)? What controls the shape of eggs? How do birds fly? \nIntrigued? Join us on 10/20 to learn more \nTo register you must be a BBC member. Please log in to your member account and heard over to the Member Resources page under the MEMBERS menu. \nNot a member but want to listen in? Please join us! SUMMARY:Pelagic Webinar: Pinch me! …. Did We Just Discover a New Species?!
DESCRIPTION:On November 19 at 7PM please join us to hear from Alvaro Jaramillo\, about the discovery of new species of seabirds. \n\n\n\nSeabirds are some of the most common and widespread species of birds in the world. On the other hand\, many of them breed on distant islands\, visiting their colonies at night\, often in treacherous waters. This is why many seabirds are so little known even today. While we learn more and more about all sorts of isolated tropical birds\, seabirds reveal their mysteries more slowly and painstakingly. \n\n\n\nOne of the most abundant seabirds\, one that is found on all oceans\, is the Wilson’s Storm-Petrel. Yet it is not what it seems. We may have underestimated what the old sailors called “Mother Carey’s Chickens.” A bird so well known to mariners that their walking-on-water behavior gave the name to all petrels (after St. Peter!)\, might not be so well known at all. \n\n\n\nAlvaro has been lucky to be involved in amazing discoveries of new nesting grounds\, and populations\, as well as some seemingly crazy goings on with Wilson’s Storm Petrels. Multiple publications scientists have described the new Pincoya Storm-Petrel and the Andean Storm-Petrel. Nesting grounds of some of these birds are now being located\, and this might be just the start. \n\n\n\nCome to hear stories about unraveling the multiple mysteries of New World storm-petrels. \n\n\n\nTo Register\n\n\n\nThis webinar is open to all. \n\n\n\nTo register with Zoom to join the webinar please use this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P0vI8VahQUeu4Y2FxZQ_VQ \n\n\n\nFor More Information
