Her goal was to see 700 species\, and to raise awareness of women’s safety in the outdoors. She ended up surpassing her goal and setting a new record\, of 726 species. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday March 1 at 3PM the Brookline Bird Club is joining with the Boston Birding Festival and Massachusetts Association of Bird Clubs to sponsor a conversation with writer Adam Nicolson\, the author of Bird School: A Beginner in the Woods. This webinar is open to all. \nTo learn the birds\, the writer Adam Nicolson built an elevated shed as his own personal school\, a man-sized birdhouse he calls an “absorbatory\,” not an observatory\, sited where and English garden and one-time farm\, birds and humans\, pasts and presents\, blur together at the wild wood edge. \nThis is the spongy “rough ground” of Adam Nicolson’s recent book\, Bird School: A Beginner In the Wood. The author of acclaimed works on history\, landscape\, and great literature\, Nicolson is also a preeminent naturalist. He is the recipient of the Somerset Maugham Award\, the W. H. Heinemann Award\, and the Ondaatje Prize. His books include The Life Between the Tides and Why Homer Matters. \nIn his bird school classroom\, Nicolson approaches the task of learning the birds with whatever tools he has on hand—philosophy\, environmental science\, poetry\, music\, history and more. DESCRIPTION:Everybody enjoys watching birds during the daytime\, but what do they do at night\, when they seem to disappear? Birds need sleep as much as we do\, and they have evolved unique sleep habits to match their intensely energetic lifestyle. Instead of long stretches of obliviousness\, they sleep in short bouts of several seconds or a few minutes\, waking up to look around for danger\, and then going back to sleep. To increase their vigilance\, birds can sleep\, shutting off only half their brain and one eye at a time\, leaving them able to respond instantly to any alarm. The social habits of sleeping birds are also distinctive. Most are solitary\, some sleep in pairs or families\, while others gain advantages of warmth\, safety\, and even social needs like finding a mate\, by joining in flocks\, not to mention guidance on where to get breakfast the next day. \nLearn more and register for the webinar.

DESCRIPTION:How have corvids mastered city life\, learned human faces and learned to use tools? What settings and experiments help humans understand some parallels between human and crow cognition? Corvids—the ubiquitous crows\, ravens\, magpies\, jays\, nutcrackers\, and relatives—are familiar backyard birds with extraordinary behaviors that enable them to thrive where most species cannot. John Marzluff will share his 40-plus years of research and findings\, as well as his current work in Yellowstone Park. \nAbout the presenter: John Marzluff is Professor Emeritus of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington\, the author and editor of many books and articles. . His research has been the focus of articles in the New York Times\, National Geographic\, Audubon\, Boys Life\, The Seattle Times\, National Wildlife\, Consumer Reports\, Time\, and Science. PBS’s NATURE featured his raven research in its production\, “Ravens”; and his crow research in the film documentary\, “A Murder of Crows” His current research focuses on the interactions of ravens and wolves in Yellowstone. DESCRIPTION:Embark on an evening of discovery as marine geochemist Scott Wieman recounts a recent month-long research expedition aboard the R/V Falkor(too) from Valparaíso to Puerto Montt\, Chile. Scott’s talk blends his experiences birding the highly productive Humboldt current with the broader expedition’s exploration of numerous methane cold seeps and submarine canyons along the Chilean Margin. In addition to sharing photographs of the diverse pelagic bird life encountered and recounting his exciting sightings – including the first Murphy’s Petrel within 1000 miles of the Chilean mainland and seven different albatross species – Scott will provide a fascinating glimpse into daily life aboard an oceanographic research vessel\, the remarkably unique deep-sea life observed\, and how dissolved methane measurements can reveal key processes in marine carbon cycling. \nAbout the presenter: Scott Wieman is a PhD Candidate in Marine Geochemistry and Ocean Instrumentation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. He cannot pinpoint exactly when his passion for birding began\, but there is a photograph of him at ~1 year old lying on the floor in a diaper with the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America open to the plate with the Blue Jay…upside down. SUMMARY:Penguin Adventures in the Falkland Islands (cosponsored with Watertown Free Public Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife photographer Shawn Carey for a photographic journey through the Falkland Islands for a close up look at several species of penguins and tips for planning your own travels! Co-sponsored with the Watertown Free Public Library. \nFor this program we will explore two locations on Saunders Islands\, The Neck\, which has three nesting penguin species plus nesting Black-browed Albatross. Then onto The Rookery with its impressive colony of Southern Rockhopper Penguins and a staggering number of Black-browed Albatross. After that we will explore Sealion Island and our first look at Elephant Seals\, Sealions and the Killer Whales that prowl the waters looking to feast on them. Next up is Bleaker Island with its beautiful mile long beach where you can watch Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins as they ride the waves onto the sandy shores. Finally\, we will end our photographic adventure at Volunteer Point which has the largest nesting King Penguin population in the Falklands. \nShawn Carey (Migration Productions) produces bird and wildlife related multi-media presentations\, videos and photo workshops that have been presented all over the United States. Shawn moved from his home in Pennsylvania to Massachusetts in 1986 and started watching birds in 1988. His avid interest in photography was joined with a newfound passion for birding and he began to combine the two in 1991. \nShawn’s photos have been published in the Boston Globe\, New York Times\, Mass Audubon Sanctuary magazine\, Science magazine\, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary magazine and many others over the last 20 years. In 1997\, he started teaching bird photography workshops (Fundamentals of Bird Photography) for the Massachusetts Audubon and he is an instructor for Summer Fields Schools\non Cape Cod for Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. \nThis will be an in-person only event.

SUMMARY:Hybrid BBC Fall Meeting: The Resplendent Quetzal
DESCRIPTION:The Brookline Bird Club invites you to our Hybrid (Live+Zoom) Fall Meeting on Friday October 25\, 2024 from 7pm-9pm\, with a social hour beginning at 6:30pm. \nThis hybrid meeting will be hosted at the Harvard University Geologic Hall (24 Oxford Street\, Cambridge) as well as via Zoom for those unable to attend live. Note that there is free parking at the 52 Oxford Street Parking garage. The event is open to BBC members and non-members. \n*** \nA dazzling and legendary bird of the highland forests of Mexico and Central America\, Aztec and Mayan cultures revered the Resplendent Quetzal. How have conservation efforts failed it in many regions\, but given it a boost in others? What else do we know? We will focus on the RQ’s nesting and feeding ecology\, on its central role in Mayan and Aztec religions\, on how it fits into the increasingly threatened rainforests that sustain it\, and on what lies ahead for this bird. Dr. Alan Poole will share the latest research on this spectacular bird. \nPresenter Bio: \nAn ornithologist with training at Princeton\, Yale\, and Woods Hole\, Alan Poole has had a long career in the worlds of research and publishing. He is an Associate of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology\, a Fellow of the American Ornithological Society\, and the recently retired editor of the Birds of North America (BNA) – an 18 volume\, 18\,000 page life history series now online at Cornell. In addition to editing\, Alan has spent over 40 years in studies of coastal birds\, particularly Ospreys\, and completed his 2 nd book on that species (Ospreys: the revival of a global raptor; Johns Hopkins University Press) in 2019.
