Join us as we listen and look for woodcocks and other nocturnal creatures.  Bring a kid and bring your enthusiasm!  Be sure to dress for the weather because we will stand in place for a bit to listen for the calls and look for the flight of the woodcock. Bring a flashlight\, and wear appropriate footwear for walking on trails\, and through grassland which may be muddy. \n

SUMMARY:Deer Island & Boston Harbor\, Winthrop
DESCRIPTION:We will search for wintering seabirds\, alcids\, and Iceland Gulls. Be prepared for cold and wind and dress very warmly. Depending on conditions\, we will walk up to 2.6 miles on paved paths. Port-a-potties available midway and near the parking area. Beginners welcome and encouraged. \nUpdate: Based on other locations\, we will be walking in packed snow with a lot of sheer ice in places. Please consider winter boots and traction aids such as yaktrax or exospikes or other similar traction aids and expect that the walking will not be nearly as easy as it would be on pavement. The leader plans to do the walk on schedule. \nThe start time is timed to the tides. \nUpdate: The leader expects to go as far as the beach where Iceland Gull is most likely and then turn back due to the snow and ice on the paths. Many nice sea ducks\, gulls\, and other nice birds will be seen. the midway porta potties will be available.

DESCRIPTION:We’re cancelling for a number of reasons. The walkways are in terrible condition\, varying from deep snow to icy paths. Weather looks iffy for Saturday. Also\, two of the leaders are unavailble. \nWe are considering finding a day later in March for a last-of-season trip to Deer Island. If we do\, we’ll post it and announce it as widely as we can. \nWe will search for wintering seabirds\, alcids\, and Iceland Gulls. Be prepared for cold and wind and dress very warmly. Depending on conditions\, we will walk up to 2.6 miles on paved paths. Port-a-potties available midway. Beginners welcome and encouraged. Bad weather or poor walking conditions may cancel – email trip leaders if you are unsure. \nThe start time is timed to the tides. \nLeaving early is possible if you can’t be there for the whole time. You would head back before we get to the halfway point. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us at sunset to (hopefully) hear and see the mating sky dance of the American Woodcock. Activity typically begins around 7:15 p.m. and lasts for about an hour. Call the trip leader if there’s rain or snow cover. We will walk ~1/2 mile along paths to the best woodcock view area.  Be prepared for muddy ground and cool temps\, and bring a flashlight or headlamp for the return walk to the parking lot. \nTime is updated cersu the Blue Book.
