DESCRIPTION:We will start our October Big Day at Great Meadows in Concord (Monsen Rd). Please join us as we try to see as many species as we can that day. \nAt the refuge\, we will walk about 3 miles on flat easy trails we will search for a variety of birds. Note that an entrance fee or pass is required. \nAfter birding Great Meadows\, we will rest a few minutes\, have a snack\, and be sure to drink something\, and then proceed to a TBD second stop. This is optional for participants. Our hope is to add some species to our Big Day lists. \nThere are basic restrooms at the Great Meadows refuge. \nEnd time is “when we’re done” but participants can of course leave early. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Arlington Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:In the fall water levels are lowered creating good conditions for ducks and shorebirds. We will also visit the adjacent Lexington community farm. Birds are found feasting on the remains of the crops planted there. We will walk about a mile on wide paths and some uneven ground (possibly muddy). SUMMARY:Weston Station Pond and nearby Mass Central Rail Trail (Rescheduled from Saturday 5/31)
DESCRIPTION:Important: if the rain is still steady on Sunday morning\, the trip is canceled. Contact the leader if uncertain. Expect wet conditions – bring waterproof footwear. To reach the bike path\, we will bypass a huge puddle that blocks the way by a side path (up a short moderately steep hill and then passing near a Weston water treatment facility). \nA good variety of birds\, Great Blue Heron colony\, chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. SUMMARY:Global Big Day Kickoff: Pine Hill Grasslands and Bolton Flats WMA
DESCRIPTION:We will visit Pine Hill Grasslands first (but meet at Bolton Flats for carpooling to Pine Hill)\, targeting grassland sparrows and warblers. We will walk at least 2.5 miles round trip but not all the way to the back of that reservation. Then off to the second stop\, Bolton Flats WMA off rt 117. There may be flooding here and very tall waterproof boots (aka Wellies\, rain boots) are likely needed. A scope would be useful\, especially at the second stop. Please email the leader (John Edmondson) if you plan to attend because there is limited parking at Pine Hill Grasslands. DESCRIPTION:A “hidden gem”\, a good variety of birds\, a Great Blue Heron colony\, good chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. DESCRIPTION:Walk 3 to 4 miles on slightly hilly trails to check out resident species in the Sanctuary’s woodlands\, wetlands and fields. We’ll be especially looking for resident warblers\, Eastern Bluebirds\, up to five species of woodpeckers\, Baltimore Orioles\, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks\, Wood Ducks\, Glossy Ibis\, and perhaps an owl. If you haven’t tried birding by ear\, this will be a chance to start! Restrooms open from 8:00 AM. Drizzly conditions okay\, heavier rain cancels.
