DESCRIPTION:Adding a trip to make up for the cancellations and to grab the chance of some late winter birding. The paths should all be fine now. It will probably be colder than you expect on the water since there’s not much shelter from any wind that is blowing. \nWe will search for wintering ducks\, Loons\, seabirds\, and possibly an unusual Gull. Be prepared for cold and wind and dress warmly. We will walk around 2.5 to 3 miles on paved paths all the way around the island. Port-a-potties available at the start and midway. Beginners welcome and encouraged. Bad weather or poor walking conditions may cancel – email trip leader if you are unsure. \nThe start time is timed to high tide. \nLeaving early is possible if you can’t be there for the whole time. \n

The leader plans to do the walk on schedule. \nThe start time is timed to the tides. \nUpdate: The leader expects to go as far as the beach where Iceland Gull is most likely and then turn back due to the snow and ice on the paths. Many nice sea ducks\, gulls\, and other nice birds will be seen. the midway porta potties will be available.

SUMMARY:Revere Beach Pop-up trip for Gulls (Gullapalooza)
DESCRIPTION:We are adding a trip to Revere Beach where a lot of gulls are present due to winter storms throwing up or exposing clams on the beach for them to eat. Large number of gulls including possibly rare gulls are there. We’ll do our best to sort through the gulls for rare ones and to work on identifying common gulls that haven’t reach adult plumage yet.  \nWe may have to traverse deep snow\, probably places where people have walked but it isn’t fully packed. Also might be messy conditions on the beach below the high tide point. Could be pretty cold. Dress for the expected conditions. \nBring a scope if you can. \nThere are good bathroom facilities at the meeting spot.  \nLow tide is 11:41 am. We want a lower tide to expose the food and give room for everything going on.

DESCRIPTION:Important: if the rain is still steady on Sunday morning\, the trip is canceled. Contact the leader if uncertain. Expect wet conditions – bring waterproof footwear. To reach the bike path\, we will bypass a huge puddle that blocks the way by a side path (up a short moderately steep hill and then passing near a Weston water treatment facility). \nA good variety of birds\, Great Blue Heron colony\, chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. DESCRIPTION:A “hidden gem”\, a good variety of birds\, a Great Blue Heron colony\, good chance of Indigo Bunting\, and other choice bird species (no guarantees). We’ll walk along Weston Station Pond and then on the bike trail westward as far as the old station\, then return by the same route. Expect to walk about 3 miles in total on easy wide trails and paved bike path (more than half on the bike path). Could be muddy on trails. There are no restrooms available at this location. DESCRIPTION:Walk 3 to 4 miles on slightly hilly trails to check out resident species in the Sanctuary’s woodlands\, wetlands and fields. We’ll be especially looking for resident warblers\, Eastern Bluebirds\, up to five species of woodpeckers\, Baltimore Orioles\, Rose-breasted Grosbeaks\, Wood Ducks\, Glossy Ibis\, and perhaps an owl. If you haven’t tried birding by ear\, this will be a chance to start! Restrooms open from 8:00 AM. Drizzly conditions okay\, heavier rain cancels.
