SUMMARY:Annual Members Meeting & Lecture with Hyla Howe: Bobolinks on the Brink
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on April 24 for our Annual Members Meeting. The evening begins with a social hour at 6:30. The program starts at 7:30 with the BBC’s annual business meeting and the election of new officers and board members. Once we have concluded with club business and announcements we will go the evening’s speaker. \nThis meeting is open to all and held at the Harvard Geological Lecture Hall at 24 Oxford Street in Cambridge. (This is next door to the Museum of Comparative Zoology.) \nConcerned about parking? Don’t Be!! Starting at 5:30 PM there will be free parking for all at the Harvard Oxford Street Garage entered off Oxford Street across from Everett Street. Just tell the attendant that you will be going to the BBC meeting. \nWhile we hope that you will be able to join us in person there will also be a Zoom link for those who cannot make it into Cambridge. \nIntroducing the BBC’s 2026 Species of Concern – The Bobolink\nAt the meeting we will kick off a new BBC initiative\, our annual Species of Concern. Each year we will designate a bird that is facing challenges in Massachusetts. \nFor 2026 our Species of Concern will be the Bobolink\, a grassland bird that faces challenges across the state. You will learn about the Bobolink during the evening’s lecture – see more below – and you will hear about field trips and other activities to learn about and support the Bobolink. \nLecture: Bobolinks on the Brink: What do Bobolinks Tell Us about Our Relationship with the Land\, and How Can We Protect Them?\nHyla Howe\, Grassland Bird Biologist at Mass Audubon and Program Manager for the Bobolink Project will join the Brookline Bird Club to discuss our first endangered species spotlight: the Bobolink! \nMass Audubon’s Grassland Bird Biologist will join the Brookline Bird Club to discuss our first endangered species spotlight: the Bobolink! Bobolink populations are closely intertwined with shifting land use patterns and agricultural practices\, and conservation solutions to protect them are complex. Hyla will share observations from the field\, insights from conversations with farmers and landowners\, takeaways from efforts to improve and scale the Bobolink Project\, and results from a regional land use change analysis to describe where bobolink conservation stands today\, and what you can do to help. \nAbout the Speaker\nHyla Howe is Mass Audubon’s Grassland Bird Biologist and the Program Manager for the Bobolink Project. Hyla received her M.S. from the University of Vermont\, where she studied grassland birds and hayfield management in New York’s Champlain Valley. She is still based in Vermont\, where she works closely with farmers\, landowners\, and regional partners to scale bird-friendly hayfield management efforts across five states. In her free time\, she enjoys biking\, skiing\, paddling\, and making pottery. \nThe Details Including Zoom Link\nWhen: April 24\, social hour staring at 6:30 PM\, program starting at 7:30 PM \nWhere: Harvard Geological Lecture Hall\, 24 Oxford Street\, Cambridge \nParking: Harvard Oxford Street Garage entered opposite Everett Street at Oxford Street \nZoom Registration Link (advance registration strongly suggested): https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_a32jwL2NQLqc8g1dl_Z1vw

Free parking at Harvard’s 52 Oxford Street Garage starting at 5:30PM.  The garage is entered across from the intersection of Oxford and Everett Streets. \nRegister for the Zoom webinar broadcast of the meeting. \nAmong the world’s “seabirds\,” gulls are the most accessible to humans\, invading our most immediate surroundings. Gulls are sometimes perceived as second class avian creatures. This\, along with the identification challenges they present and their readiness to hybridize\, creates a love-hate relationship for many birders. Yet some gull species are among the most coveted birds on any birder’s list (think Ross’s Gull and Ivory Gull). This makes for an interesting juxtaposition. Do we like some gulls and look past others? \nAmar Ayyash is both an expert on the gulls of North America and an evangelist for “gull recreation.” He coordinates the IOS Annual Gull Frolic on Lake Michigan\, hosts the popular website anythinglarus.com\, and he speaks at birding events throughout the continent. Much of his free time is dedicated to traveling the world to photograph and study gulls. Amar is the author of the authoritative guide to North American Gulls\, The Gull Guide. \nCopies of The Gull Guide will be for sale by the author. \nFollowing up on the evening’s presentation\, the BBC will offer two field trips focused on gull identification: \n\n11/15 at Revere Beach\, 10AM\n12/6 at Winthrop Beach\, 7:30AM\n\n  \n

SUMMARY:2025 Members Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for 2025 Members Night! \nMark your calendar and save the evening of Saturday February 8\, 2025 from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM for our annual BBC Members Night to be held at the John Glenn Middle School at 99 McMahon Street in Bedford. \nThis event is a chance for BBC members to share their stories via poems\, slide shows\, video\, graphic arts\, and more. All proceeds will go to the BBC. Unsold books will be donated to More Than Words in Waltham. \nIf you would like to present at the Showcase that night please email BBC Vice-President Cliff Cook at ccook@brooklinebirdclub.org. Please include a short description of what you would like to show us as well as a phone number and email address where you can be contacted. \nIf you would like to donate books please plan to arrive at 6:30 or before. \nThe meeting is free and open to all. SUMMARY:Penguin Adventures in the Falkland Islands (cosponsored with Watertown Free Public Library)
DESCRIPTION:Join wildlife photographer Shawn Carey for a photographic journey through the Falkland Islands for a close up look at several species of penguins and tips for planning your own travels! Co-sponsored with the Watertown Free Public Library. \nFor this program we will explore two locations on Saunders Islands\, The Neck\, which has three nesting penguin species plus nesting Black-browed Albatross. Then onto The Rookery with its impressive colony of Southern Rockhopper Penguins and a staggering number of Black-browed Albatross. After that we will explore Sealion Island and our first look at Elephant Seals\, Sealions and the Killer Whales that prowl the waters looking to feast on them. Next up is Bleaker Island with its beautiful mile long beach where you can watch Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins as they ride the waves onto the sandy shores. Finally\, we will end our photographic adventure at Volunteer Point which has the largest nesting King Penguin population in the Falklands. \nShawn Carey (Migration Productions) produces bird and wildlife related multi-media presentations\, videos and photo workshops that have been presented all over the United States. Shawn moved from his home in Pennsylvania to Massachusetts in 1986 and started watching birds in 1988. His avid interest in photography was joined with a newfound passion for birding and he began to combine the two in 1991. \nShawn’s photos have been published in the Boston Globe\, New York Times\, Mass Audubon Sanctuary magazine\, Science magazine\, Hawk Mountain Sanctuary magazine and many others over the last 20 years. In 1997\, he started teaching bird photography workshops (Fundamentals of Bird Photography) for the Massachusetts Audubon and he is an instructor for Summer Fields Schools\non Cape Cod for Mass Audubon Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. \nThis will be an in-person only event.

SUMMARY:Stony Brook Reservation Bird Walk with Boston Birding Festival and Walking City Trail
DESCRIPTION:We’ll explore and look for birds in the  along the Walking City Trail in the Stony Brook Reservation in the heart of Boston\, in collaboration with Boston Birding Festival and Walking City Trail. Expect about 2 miles miles on trails that will be difficult in places. The trails can be rocky\, have exposed roots\, and somewhat steep. They can also be muddy if it has rained recently. \nEstablished in 1894 as a city greenspace\, Boston’s Stony Brook Reservation is managed by the Metropolitan Park System of Greater Boston and the DCR. This urban gem deserves and has special value to people who live nearby. The wilder sections of this property are known for their dramatic rocky cliffs and outcroppings and include woodlands\, brooks\, a beautiful pond\, floodplain and marshes\, shallow wetlands\, and certified vernal pools. At the north\, Bellevue Hill\, at 338 feet\, is the highest point in the city of Boston and can be good for hawk-watching. \nFor this walk\, we’ll explore the eastern side of Stony Brook Reservation and see what late migrants and resident birds we can find. \nThis is an opportunity to learn a bit more about the Boston Birding Festival and the Walking City Trail. (This bird walk will walk on a section of the WCT.) \nNew birders are welcome\, and we will have some binoculars to lend. \nRegistration with Boston Birding Festival is required at this link (https://www.bostonbirdingfestival.org/posts/stony-brook-reservation-walk/). In addition BBF requires a waiver (made available through the registration process) which you should print and sign and bring with you. They will have waiver forms available if you forget.
